Welcome to Mass's Power of the Purse Page
I have believed in and supported YWCA Greater Lafayette for many years. Starting in 2006, I began serving as a volunteer translator for the Hispanic Advocacy division of the Domestic Violence Intervention and Prevention Program (DVIPP). As a faculty member teaching Spanish at Ivy Tech Community College and a few upper-division Spanish language courses at Purdue as adjunct faculty, I recruited some of my most talented civic-minded students to also volunteer. In 2008, my band Squirtgun performed at a show in Lafayette from which all profits were donated to DVIPP Hispanic Advocacy--and a subsequent live CD recorded at that show, titled "Broadcast 02.09.08," was released with international distribution, with a portion of the profits shared with the very same program.
Now in 2020, I have committed to participating and raising funds for YWCA Greater Lafayette's Power of the Purse – a fundraising campaign to support women, survivors and families through vital YWCA services.
The "Power of the Purse" is the ability and power to make independent financial decisions. Throughout history, women and marginalized communities have been denied full power over their own purses.
Through domestic violence intervention, access to cancer screenings, youth development programs and empowerment services, YWCA works every day to lift up women and girls in our community. They are on a mission to make sure every person has the opportunity to live a life with dignity, a life that is free of violence and full of potential. The welcoming and judgement-free programming is a safe space for women of all backgrounds to feel safe, supported and strengthened.
Like YWCA Greater Lafayette, I believe that with support, empowerment and financial assistance, we can remove barriers to make this mission a reality. That’s why I’m committed to raising at least $1,000 (but as much as possible) for YWCA Greater Lafayette's Power of the Purse. I will support YWCA and hope that you’ll join with me in contributing to this cause! The money raised will help these essential, empowering programs to continue thriving.
